5 Plants Which Can Help With Your Cold or Flu

Even though winter has finally ended, there are still lots of colds and cases of flu circulating throughout the community.  More and more people are turning to natural alternatives for trying to help them with their cold or flu.  In this article, we’re going to be covering the most common plants used to heal these minor illnesses.

1. Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits such as oranges are fantastic for helping to raise your Vitamin C levels.  They’re natural immune boosting capabilities are fantastic for when you can feel the onset of a cold.

2. Mint

Mint actually has three particularly useful benefits when it comes to treating common colds.  The main active ingredient in the plant is menthol – this is great for loosening phlegm and thinning mucus that makes it harder for us to cough.  Furthermore, you can use mint extract as a way to clear your nose, so you can breathe easier.  Lastly, it’s also a fantastic way to ease a sore throat or stomach.

3. Ginger

Ginger root has some fantastic properties when it comes to easing the common cold.  It’s actually been used throughout Chinese medicine for centuries.  An enjoyable way to digest ginger root would be to mix little pieces of it in a cup of hot water with lemon and honey.  This is usually an all-time favourite for most.

4. Elderberry

Elderberry has been known to reduce the severity and duration of cold and flu symptoms.  You can usually find this amazing remedy in the form of tablets or tea.  Be careful not to eat its berries uncooked though or unripened as they can be poisonous. If you plan on implementing elderberry into your natural remedy diet, be sure to first consult with your doctor.

5. Garlic

Garlic has some amazing properties when it comes to boosting your immune system.  If you increase your garlic consumption at the start of the cold and flu season, you’ll be able to reap most of its benefits.  If you don’t mind having smelly breath, this natural alternative can do you wonders!
